JSTP lnternational Prize for
Research & Development of Precision Forging

Awarded by Japan Society for TechnoIogy of Plasticity
with the Fund Donated by Nichidai Co.
on the 0ccasion of the lnternational Conference on Technology of PIasticity

Purpose:
The "JSTP lnternational Prize for R&D in Precision Forging" is established to promote research and development in precision forging and other net shape forming methods. The purpose of the Prize is to recognize distinguished researchers who contributed to the world wide advancement of precision forming technology with high quality research work. In association of this Prize, a "Seminar on Precision forging" will be held in Japan. At this seminar, the members of the Prize Selection Board will give leoctures and visits will be arranged to Nichidai Co.,other forming companies and institutions involved in forming research and practice. Young researchers from various countries will be invited to participatein this seminar.
Technical Areas:
Candidates for the Prize will be selected from researchers who are working in technologies related to precision forging and other precision forming methods, including but not limited to :theory of forming, forming machines, die and tools, lubrication and coating technology, forming materials, simulation of forming processes and Computer Aided Engineering.
Policy:
(1)Candidates must have made a clearly original work such as development of a new forming method, new theory, etc. that have had a significant impact on precision forming technology. The results of this contribution must be published and recognized internationally. (2)The nationality of the candidates is not a criterion of selection. (3)Although research institutions, companies and groups cannot be candidates for the prize because this prize aims at valueing distinguished persons with great creativity, they can recommend candidates to JSTP.
Award:
Five mimon yen(about 50,000US$ in 1999) in total and a gold medal are awarded to one or two winners every three years on the occasion of the International Conference on Technology of Plasticity (ICTP) to be held somewhere in the world.
Winners:
5th ICTP(1996)Prof. Taylan Altan(USA)
5th ICTP(1996)Prof. Hideaki Kudo(Japan))
6th ICTP(1999)Prof. Kurt Lange(Germany)
6th ICTP(1999)Dr. Hubert Lloyd David Pugh(UK)

Obligation of winner:
The prize winner should give a special lecture during the ICTP.
Method of selection:
1)JSTP will commission the Forging Research Committee of JSTP to appoint a chairman for the Selection Board from Japan, and three other board members from other countries:one from Asia, one from America and Oceania, and one from Europe and Africa. 2)JSTP will commission the International Exchange Committee of JSTP to elect evaluators. The evaluators will monitor the pnocess of selection and the associated documents and other materials. They will report their obsenrvations and their recommendations on selecting process to JSTP, Nichidai Co. and the Forging Research Committee.
International Seminar on Precision Forging:
A two day "International Seminar on Precision Forging", related to the Award, will be held in Japan. At this seminar, the members of the Selection Board and other invited speakers will give lectures. Before and/or after the seminar, visits will be arranged to Nichidai Corp. other forming companies and/or research institutions. About 30 young researchers under 35 years old (about1/3 from Japan,1/3 from Asia and 1/3 from odher areas) will be selected by JSTP and invited to attend the seminar by providing travel grants. The budget allocated for covering these travel expenses will be five million yen.
